How Coin Street Cut its Carbon Footprint

Coin Street ExteriorWith tighter EU legislation on environmental impact looming, and a changing tide in consumer expectation it is more important than ever for businesses to have an environmental policy in place. While for the events industry this may prove something of a challange, change IS taking place and certain organizations are providing a shining example..

Coin Street Community builders is one such organization. Its new conference and meetings facility has been designed to have minimal environmental impact while also looking after the local community. From recycling waste to how the toilets are flushed no green opportunity has been spared! Read on to find out how they do it...

Summary of Environmental Benefits of this Venue

- Rainwater is used to flush toilets

- Solar Chimneys have been installed along the front of the building to automatically naturally ventilate the building

- A BMS (Building Management system) that turns on the fluorescent lighting only when it’s required

-  Solar Hot water is used for sinks in the toilets and showers

- Carefully balanced glazing areas on each elevation for optimum shading and light admittance

- Mechanical ventilation in acoustically sensitive rooms that overrides the natural ventilation system only when required

- Super-insulated façade panels, roof and floors, exposed thermal mass GGBS (sustainable aggregate) concrete ceilings, and the extensive use of untreated FSC (forestry stewardship council) certified timber

- The building is designed both for cultural and physical accessibility, balancing the requirements of a very diverse user group within a mixed use, community project.

- Fully DDA compliant, the Neighbourhood Centre has been developed in consultation with a professional access consultant and in detailed dialogue with the building’s users.
