From Hell's Kitchen to Champions League

15 January 2008

As part of a drive to promote the Hospitality, Leisure, Travel and Tourism sectors in the London Borough of Lambeth (Lambeth), a free seminar is being sponsored by Lambeth aimed at giving bars, restaurants and other tourism businesses advice on how best to market themselves in this challenging and ever changing business segment.

Help
The goal is to help companies in this sector not only grow their customer base but will also look at customer retention, increased profitability and sharing best practice.  The event is being organised on behalf of the council by Management Focus and Gavurin and will take place on Wednesday 6th February from 1.30-5.00pm at Coin Street Neighbourhood Centre, Stamford Street, SE1 9NH.

Leaders
The speakers are all leaders in the hospitality, club and marketing sectors. They are giving up their time to help raise standards and attract more customers to the Borough. They include; Jonathan Cooper of Amano, Julian Clarke-Jervoise of First Protocol, Lynda Sudlow of Feast of Friends, Stuart Hopson Jones of the Prince and Dex and founder of the Brixton Collective, and Moira Taylor of LondonMICE.  Each will share secrets of their own success and will challenge their peers to provide a more interesting customer offer along with better quality service. This will ultimately give the visitor a more positive experience and result in more customers for everyone.

Location, location, location
While the adage, location, location, location still holds, increasing competition demands that pubs, clubs, restaurants and other visitor attractions need to work ever harder to promote themselves.  As Jonathan Cooper, MD of Amano says “The café market is already crowded so we needed to come up with something different.  We believe that we have achieved that with a new style of 'place' to eat, drink and enjoy one another’s company!  However, we need to give customers a reason not only to come to our cafe in the first place but to return again and again, so we have to work hard on quality and service”.

Likewise, members of the Brixton Collective are striving to promote Brixton as a vibrant, diverse centre for music and nightlife.  Stuart Hopson Jones, along with other business owners, set up the Collective to overcome the area’s negative image of drugs, guns and crime.

Promoting events businesses
LondonMICE was set up three years ago to promote the interests of businesses in the Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions industry Membership includes venues, restaurants and caterers.  Moira Taylor, General Manager of LondonMICE says “We deal day in day out with corporate businesses looking for somewhere interesting to host corporate events and where quality standards can be guaranteed”.

Experienced Speakers
The choice of speakers has been driven by “businesses being much more receptive to business advice and guidance offered by fellow businesses rather than consultants or public agencies” says Martin Houghton, Director of Management Focus, the company leading the project putting on the event.
