Sainsbury's makes a difference at Congress Centre

15 November 2007

Sainsbury’s recently chose Congress Centre as the venue for an event staged to help make a difference to the nation’s health. The morning event, entitled Make the Difference: The Wellbeing Debate, was chaired by Fiona Bruce and was designed to discover what drives teenagers’ decisions about diet and exercise and to help identify practical ways to encourage them to make healthier choices.

Key stakeholders

A number of teenagers and their parents were invited to the event, which took place on 11th October from 8:30am until 1pm, along with key stakeholders such as policy-makers, nutritionists, food manufacturers and health experts.

Highly interactive
The highly interactive event, which utilised live key pad voting technology, was attended by 120 people. It was fast-paced, lively and informative and succeeded in really engaging the audience. Importantly, by hearing directly from teenagers a great deal was learnt about their attitudes towards diet, lifestyle and food provenance. The results are now being used to come up with fresh ideas about actions that the food industry, the Government and individuals can take to help teenagers make more informed choices about their health and the food they eat.

Opportunity to contribute
All attendees joined small discussion groups chaired by a facilitator who ensured that everyone had the opportunity to contribute to the debate.  Live voting meant that immediate feedback could be shared and there were plenty of opportunities for attendees to comment on suggestions made by each of the different groups.

A great success
According to Louisa Cook, event manager at Powwow Events who helped with organising the event, “The event was a great success and the results have given Sainsbury’s a fresh insight into the minds of the noughties teenager. We were looking for a large modern venue for this event in a very accessible location and Congress Centre was a great choice. It’s an impressive daylight venue only a few minutes’ walk from the tube in the heart of London’s West End and the service and attention to detail the team provided ensured the event ran smoothly.”
